What is the News Fellowship?

Created in 2023, this program offers early-career journalists the opportunity to report on civic affairs in underserved communities, from rural to urban. The state-funded initiative was conceived to place 16 fellows with Washington news organizations to report for two years, full-time. As the program began in 2024, journalists reported in communities across the state; the first six began in April, three more in summer, and seven in October. Starting in January, two six-month fellows covered the 2025 state legislature, reporting for TV and print. In addition, the two-year fellows receive ongoing training, mentorship and a strong cohort experience.

The 2025 Washington State legislature authorized sufficient funding in June 2025 to keep the fellows in the field through September 2026. Civic leaders, journalism catalysts and university officials across the state are pursuing strategies to bolster the program.
